Ilse's Fate, by David O Solmitz

Ilse's Fate, a novel takes place in Germany between 1913 and 1945. It incorporates my parents' experience, their family and friends' experiences before and during the Nazi Holocaust. The thesis of this fictional tale is that we are all endowed with seeds for good and evil behaviors. Sometimes conditions including insecurity enhance latent bad behavior. For some horrendous conditions evoke good and courageous action. Living a secluded childhood at a manor until age six, until the family lost their estate during World War One, Ilse and her unwelcoming, widowed father move into a small Munich apartment. As a young teenager seeking confidence and acceptance among her peers to survive in a hostile world, she becomes involved in the Nazi movement. Coexisting conflicts between good and evil within her, lead Ilse into heart wrenching experiences that eventually destroy her both emotionally and physically. Throughout the novel she encounters good people as well as uncouth and depraved individuals. The Epilogue documents what transpired to those in Ilse's Fate who survived the Nazi/Holocaust era. The Afterword details how the experiences of the real people are portrayed through specific characters in the novel. For example, I show how my father's Report on Dachau, describing his experience as a prisoner at the concentration camp, is portrayed in the story, as well as its impact on his life after Dachau.

I read "Ilse's Fate" and it certainly deals with "fate" in several senses of the word.
I've read more than a few Holocaust books, but most tend to deal with the personalities as unidimensional. I liked the treatment of Ilse as a person tormented by the conflict between good and evil, a person who had an inner sense of what was right, but who succumbed to the dark side out of her own desire for acceptance and to "fit in".
We see Ilse move like a sleepwalker through life, beginning as the emotionally neglected daughter of a widowed, self absorbed, and autocratic father. As a child she struggles to raise herself, drawing support from a number of "shadow mentors" (some Jewish), all the while trying vainly to please her uncaring father. As a school girl she falls in with adherents of the nascent Nazi movement and finds acceptance in a movement which offers solidarity and sense of purpose, a movement towards a "Brave New World". Early on she finds herself repelled by its darker aspects, but her need for acceptance draws her in and sets her on her doomed path towards working as a camp guard where she takes part in abuses of Jewish prisoners, all the while feeling tormented by her inner knowledge that what she is doing is wrong. Her lonely death at war's end bookends this tale of moral conflict and how life's circumstances may impel a person to perdition...
I found it a good read whose story moves along well and provides good insights the age old conflict between good and evil.

By Bob Alexander
In David Solmitz’s novel, Ilse’s Fate, the main character joins the Nazi movement but becomes more and more disenchanted, especially while she serves as a concentration camp guard. Her depressing marriage to a Nazi functionary increases her misery.
Throughout the novel, the reader remains engaged by the complexity of the main character and by the twists, turns, and forward movement of the plot. The Epilogue, which narrates the postwar fate of Ilse’s husband, adds a satisfying conclusion.
Ilse’s Fate emphasizes the intricacies of the Holocaust, which become more pronounced as additional evidence comes to light. References to Ernst Cassier, the Consolation of Philosophy, painting, and music, further enrich the narrative.

A very personal book! Ilse's story is so tragic and sad, but beautifully told. Couldn't help but wonder, what would I have done in Ilse's shoes.
