The succeeding commentary recounts the making of the film, and traces the real-life sources of Chaplin's memories: the people and theaters of London's Soho, and the unique ballet tradition of the two great theaters of Leicester Square, the Empire and the Alhambra, commemorated in Limelight for the first and only time on film. The book is illustrated with a great wealth of previously unpublished documents and photographs from the Chaplin archives, historic pictures of the theatrical world of Chaplin's youth and images from the author's private collection.

Everything Charles Chaplin has offered to the world is a miracle in itself.
This book enlightens many people on the subject of performance, public and audience, success and so called failure. It is semi autobiographical as Charles was in his later years when he wrote the book Footlights which became the script for Limelight. The dancer and the clown.
I always love Charlie Chaplin so I am very biased to begin with, and not disappointed of course.

If you like rough drafts . . .

This very slim paperback (45 pages) is so small that for a moment I thought amazon had sent me an empty box! It reads like a rough draft or an outline to be expanded into a full size book. Having read and loved "The Little Princess" for years, this book offered no surprises, only mild disappointment. Some characters are missing, such as Sara's "fellow prisoner". There are contradictions; first Sara cries for several days after her father leaves and a few pages later, it says that Sara never cries.

If you want to read a fairly detailed synopsis of the book, then this paperback will work, or if you simply want to round off your collection. Otherwise, stick with the real thing.

Not to different

It's about the same as little princess but there is no Becky. And in parts of the book it says Sara Cry's. But then later it says she rarely Cry's that's the only different. And not to much says about Sara interacting with the other girls but ermagard.

Paul E. Sigmund is Professor of Politics at Princeton University. He is the author of numerous books, including The Ideologies of the Developing Nations, Natural Law in Political Thought, The Overthrow of Allende and the Politics of Chile, and Liberation Theology at the Crossroads. He defines what it means to be civilized!

John Locke has more influence on Western political culture than just providing Jefferson with his ideas and words for the Declaration of independence. Through his writings, particularly through his Second Treatise and Social Contract, he defines what it means to be civilized.

Combatants and non-combatants, criminals and soldiers, he presents a clarity that is missing in today's political world. If only our political leaders, and members of the press would read Locke . . there would be less ambiguity on who is and who is not deserving of our attention. As an example, non-combatants have never given their permission to be a potential target, and anyone not respecting this fact is a criminal. Period.

Some of his writings may no longer be relevant, such as his arguments against divine rights of kings, and he may be too idealistic in his expectations that people will only take what they need, but he was writing over 300 years ago, within a political climate quite different than at the present time, and at least some of his remarks should be placed in this perspective.

A Table of Contents would be helpful

Locke's work remains of enduring value. The accompanying academic writings are incisive, providing a variety of perspectives from different theoretical biases. This comprehensive work offers the solid base for a mature appreciation of Locke's accomplishments and weaknesses.

That said, the book suffers from two grievous flaws. First, the font is exceptionally small; get high-powered reading glasses. Second, and more damning -- especially for a compendium, there is no table of contents. This reflects poorly upon the publisher. For those reasons, I knock off the stars.

Superb selected edition

Paul Sigmund brings over a half-century of scholarly and classroom experience to this fine selected edition of Locke's works. Not only does he offer the reader substantive portions of Locke's major works, this edition also includes meaty selections from Locke's Locke's lesser known works as well as entries from other luminaries that influenced Locke's thought and times (Grotius, Hooker, Hobbes, etc.). Perhaps most unique is Sigmund's inclusion of several works by various Locke scholars which present the student with some of the various ways in which Locke has been interpreted. Finally, Sigmund's introduction is itself indispensable for newcomers and Locke veterans alike (full disclosure: while now a professor, I studied under Sigmund and thus can affirm his book is helpful both for the student and the scholar).

Finally, to briefly address two criticisms made in another review, the book most certainly DOES have a thorough and helpful table of contents from pages v-viii. It may not be visible on Amazon but it is in the book. As for the print being too small, this Norton edition, while helpful for Locke readers of all levels, is particularly meant to be useful for college students. Such students not only have sharper eyesight than those of us a bit older, but they also appreciate the additional content they get per page for their dollar.

Locke remains a crucial figure for understanding the origins of liberal government, modernity, and the American experiment in ordered liberty. He is a fascinating figure, and Paul Sigmund is an exemplary guide to his work.

Unique book

This is not one more book, but the foundation of a theory not yet understood and much more not yet accepted. It opens new frontiers in biology and life sciences. The role of electromagnetism is vital to the concept of life. Each cell should not be considered and studied as one unit, but as part of one organism (my though is that maybe the one organism should be considered as part of one ecosystem). If you are trying to answer how external electromagnetic fields can affect a living organism, then you will find unique the idea that field intensity is not the criterion. Weak fields can be more important than strong fields.
Anyway, this book is classical and rare. It revolutionizes life sciences, enters unexplored regions. If you are a true scientist take it, if you can find it.

Meaty Survey and Suggestions for Frurther Research

This book is an excellent monograph that discusses the role of the electromagnetic fields and waves in the phenomena of Life. The first chapter is a summary of the relevant results from electromagnetic theory pertaining to the interaction of fields and waves with material media. Only the results are quoted and the reader is referred to specialized texts such as Landau & Lifshitz "Electrodynamics of Continuous Media".

In the second part of this book, by far the largest, the author surveys and summarizes almost 50 years of experimental research - until 1967 - on the electromagnetic phenomena and Life. These experiments cover the interactions of static and dynamic fields with biological macro-molecules, unicellular organisms, plants, animals, humans as well as the intrinsic electromagnetic phenomena to the living systems (such as skin surface electric fields).

After reading this section, I was left with no doubt as to the reality of the influence of external electromagnetic fields and waves on biological systems.

The third part of this book is a discussion of potentially productive areas for further research in the light of the common results of these experiments. Here the author suggests a number of broad areas of research together with a bit of speculation about what could be explained by the results of those future researches. In effect, he is recommending a research program in this part of the book.

The book may be read profitably by anyone with the following background:

1- Advanced High-School Level Biology
2- Electromagnetic Theory at the level of a 3rd year student of Physics or Electrical Engineering
3- Modern Physics at the level of a 2nd year student of Physics or Electrical Engineering

One feature of this book is 47 pages of references to original scientific literature - many of them unfortunately in Russian.

I agree with the first reviewer and I think this book is worth reading from cover to cover.

Highly recommended as great scientific monograph.

Come with Gage and me to Peru as we have a little adventure inside the burgeoning Peruvian drug trade. The plot for this book came to me after my brother-in-law told me a few stories about contraband found on U.S. Air Force aircraft during his tour in Afghanistan. From there, the seed bloomed and the plot, along with Sonny Calabrese, took shape. I hope you enjoy it. Also, I'm overwhelmed by the numerous requests I've received for more Gage Hartline. ~~Corruption and Greed Equals a Captivating Read~~

This is one intense and captivating read from the first to the last page. It is filled with intrigue plus has the corruption that the cocaine industry has created interwoven into this spell binding novel. Gage Hartline is employed working for a retired CEO of a credit card company. This is a most lucrative position with ample time off. Gage decides to visit his mentor, COL Hunter (now retired) in Fayetteville. Gage wants to run a new employment job by him. And, as expected, the COL doesn't like the portion about 'killing for hire', if necessary. Gage decides to accept the new challenge but something doesn't click about his employer, Falco. What is that old saying about 'trusting your gut'? Off to Lima he goes and he becomes gainfully employed by Alfa Seguridad led by Sonny Calabrese. All of these employees were elite soldiers prior to going to Lima, Peru, to work for Sonny.

This is one roller coaster ride - from the US to Lima and back again - some of the characters create mayhem and havoc; others are trying to take over the cocaine business and some just outright want to kill and kill some more. There is a scene in a garage in SC that I will not forget soon. And, I nearly forgot the dual scene at La Merced.! My word, that is incredible, too. The monetary value of the cocaine when broken down by kilo is mind boggling. When one discovers the people responsible for transporting the coke and the manner in which it is done, one will be completely flabbergasted!

All in all, a well written novel with twists and turns along many of the paths. The characters have a depth to them that is not normally found in a book. Their backgrounds enhance the characters so the reader is able to gain more perspective into their lives than normal. Plot is well conceived, excellent mix of characters and the ending is both surprising and justified.

Soldier of Misfortune is Driskell's Coming of Age

To say that Gage Hartline is drawn to dangerous situations is a bit like saying Bill Clinton enjoys the company of women or Kim Kardashian doesn't mind a little publicity. Like a moth drawn to a flame, Gage simply can't help himself!

When Gage is offered the chance to go undercover in Peru to find out why ex-soldiers working for narco-baron Sonny Calabrese keep turning up dead, his most revered and trusted mentor pleads with him to turn and run the other way. Even Gage knows it is a suicide mission. But Gage Hartline is like a great thoroughbred race horse born to run - he can't change who he is even if it ultimately costs him his life.

One of the best things about Driskell's evolution as a writer is his blossoming ability to seamlessly create breathtaking and harrowing plots while gradually revealing Hartline's admirable yet flawed character. With every book I learn more about what drives this heroic and sometimes tragic man. At first glance, it is tempting to see him as an unrepentant adrenaline addicted mercenary. But he is far more than that. He is, first and foremost, a protector who is guided by a deeply ingrained sense of personal justice that overrides any and all allegiances and relationships. Gage sees this as an almost noble calling and will not allow anything or anyone to interfere with what he believes to be his duty.

The conflicts this creates and his struggles to reconcile duty with the normal personal desires of love, friendship, home, etc... are fascinating to watch evolve.

Soldier of Misfortune allows us to see Gage's continuing evolution as a hero and as a man. It also allows us to see Driskell continue to evolve as a tremendously skilled author. Driskell gets better with each novel and I believe Soldier of Misfortune marks his coming of age as a master of the thriller genre.

This was #3 in the Gage Hartline series. I had read books 1 and 2, and reviewed both. Like those prior to this book, "...Misfortune" well satisfied my love for covert ops. I like the intrigue laid out by the antagonists, in this case, an American expatriate operating a drug stealing operation against the Peruvian drug cartels. Hartline is sent to Peru to take out the head antagonist. Gage, the head protagonist of the story, equally set his own course of planning in order to carry out his mission. The intrigue by both Gage and the principal antagonist is what brings the story line to a compelling conclusion.
I don't re-tell story lines in my reviews, but suffice it to say, this covert ops book kept me "hooked" from page one to page last. The plot was well developed. The characters were also well developed. The story flowed continually without any "dead" spots. The book had great thread, by which I mean if/when I put it down and later came back to it, I did not have to re read pages to remember where I had left off. That's a good mark for story line delivery and reader memory.
For anyone interested in reading about the drug cartels and how they carry out their mission, and the covert ops employed to thwart that mission, this is an extremely interesting and enjoyable read.
Apart from this series, I have read other books by Chuck Driskell and enjoyed them as much...but those were reviews from another perspective.
I highly recommend this book and believe any one reading it will agree it was time well spent.
