Martin Christopher is Professor of Marketing and Logistics at Cranfield School of Management. His work in the field of logistics and supply chain management has gained international recognition. He has published widely, his recent books include Logistics and Supply Chain Management and Marketing Logistics. He is is also co-editor of the International Journal of Logistics Management and is a regular contributor to conferences and workshops around the world. At Cranfield, Martin Christopher chairs the Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management, the largest activity of its type in Europe. In addition to leading a number of on-going research projects in logistics and supply chain management, Martin Christopher is active as an advisor to many organisations and is non-executive director of a number of companies. In 1988 he was awarded the Sir Robert Lawrence Gold Medal for his contribution to logistics education and in 1997 was given the USA Council of Logistics Management¿s Foundation Award.

A Great Introduction and Textbook

This book was my first introduction to the fields of logistics and supply chain management as the textbook for my graduate-level international logistics class. What I like most about this book is that Martin Christopher is concise. Christopher created a book that, while compact, conducts a wide-reaching overview of the subject. There is room for Christopher to delve deeper into certain topics, but his avoidance is what makes the book highly accessible. I highly recommend this as an introduction to the subject for business students, MBA students, or anyone who wants to get familiar with logistics and supply chain management.

Grade 8 Up–In 2076 in the United Safer States of America, verbal abuse, obesity, and dangerous activities are against the law. Helmets and health food are de rigueur, and sports are either outlawed or radically changed (runners' track times have slowed appreciably because of the bulky safety equipment required). The penalty for breaking any of the rules is a lengthy prison term, and 24 percent of the population is incarcerated and responsible for doing much of the country's manual labor–without pay. For Bo Marsten, 16, the punishment for allegedly spreading a rash through school is a prison sentence, which is suspended, but he then goes to jail for lack of self-control after he hits a classmate. Bo has the opportunity to reduce his sentence when he's chosen for the prison's (illegal) football team, but the sadistic coach is determined that his players win at any cost. This odd pairing of satire and sports thriller is carried along by the protagonist's confident narrative voice. The angry teen is struggling to explore his options in a world that has little concern for his emotional well-being. The satire is obvious but astute, and Bo's development is convincing. *Starred Review* Gr. 9-12. It's very likely that the world has never seen a sports novel quite like this one, which evokes Louis Sachar's Holes (1998), M. T. Anderson's Feed (2004), and Chris Lynch's explorations of male aggression in Inexcusable (2005), all the while avoiding the merest whisper of predictability. In the United Safer States of America of the late twenty-first century, a national obsession with safety has criminalized even minor "antisocial impulses." Bo's dad "was put away in '73 for roadrage"; the teen's own anger issues likewise land him in one of the country's privatized penal colonies. There, he makes pizzas for McDonald's until the camp's sadistic overseer recruits him to play football. The illegal sport is brutally violent but exhilarating--and Bo, a gifted athlete, slowly begins to question his culture's basic assumptions, identifying with crotchety Gramps' view that "the country went to hell the day we decided we'd rather be safe than free." At times, Hautman takes his signature eclecticism to an extreme, placing Bo in confrontations with polar bears, an intrusive artificial intelligence entity, and officials who suspect him of causing a rash outbreak. Like the author's similarly audacious Godless (2004), though, this will satisfy teens with an appetite for big questions and gleeful ambiguities, while ratcheting up the mind-trip factor with a gimlet-eyed extrapolation of the future. Food for Thought, A Fast-Paced Plot, and Teen-Friendly Trappings: Masterful

Rash by Pete Hautman is a wry look at a possible 2070s United States, now called the USSA (United Safer States of America? United Socialist States of America?). In this dystopian society, Americans (as well as people in most other countries) have traded freedom and independence for safety. It's no longer legal to play football, or to run without wearing extensive padding a helmet. Alcohol, cigarettes, temper tantrums, hunting, large dogs - all illegal. Three quarters of people over the age of ten are on the drug Levulor, which slows their reflexes, and helps them to keep their tempers in check.

Levulor apparently doesn't work all that well, though, because twenty-four percent of adults are in prison. The government uses prison labor to do the jobs that other people don't want to do, like cleaning septic systems, working on roads, and making frozen food products. People are carted off for all sorts of minor infractions (including "self-mutilation", which can include weighing too much), because their labor is needed in the work camps.

Rash is the story of sixteen-year-old Bo, who lives with his ineffectual mother and his nostalgic Gramps, while his father and older brother are off in prison. Sandbagged by a rival, Bo is unfairly blamed for a mysterious rash that spreads through his school. Pushed to the breaking point, he lashes out against his rival, and is sentenced to three years of labor in a prison camp up in the (former) Canadian tundra. The workers in this camp spend 18 hours a day, seven days a week, making pizzas. The camp actually reminded me a lot of the youth offender camp in "Holes", but set in a much colder climate.

Taken out of the protective cushion of society, Bo encounters things he's never seen before. Deliberate violence and cruelty. Football. Polar bears. And, surprisingly, the feeling of being part of a team. Meanwhile, an artificial intelligence agent that Bo created before he left evolves into a sentient being called Bork. Bork starts communicating with Bo, and works to rescue him from a land of endless pizza and football.

I liked double-entendre of "rash" in the book. Bo is wrongly accused of creating a rash. His real crime is his own rash behavior, in a society where being rash is just about the worst thing a person can be. I also enjoyed the character of Gramps, constantly reminiscing about his youth (when people could actually own guns, and buy beer in restaurants, and wear sneakers). Bork is also a lot of fun - Hautman does a nice job of capturing his gradual shift from computer to independent thinker, and his development of a sense of humor.

Overall, I found Rash to be a fast read, one that grabbed my attention from the first page, and didn't let go until I finished. In addition to reminding me of "Holes", Rash evoked a more benign "1984". What's disturbing about this book is that our society is right now on a slippery slope, trading off freedom for safety. We face these questions every day. Hautman takes a look at how sterile and monotonous our society could become, if this balance slips too far. He does this while simultaneously giving us a fast-moving plot with teen-friendly trappings (hand-held computers, artificial intelligence, pizza, football, and teen male posturing). All in all, I found it to be a masterful accomplishment from this National Book Award winning author (for Godless).

Well written, funny, informative

I wan't sure what to expect going into this, I just knew that I loved Lagunitas. Tony has an amazing voice, and even dry subjects like cash flow are interesting from his perspective. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves learning everything they can about the craft beer industry

Great book but hard to find a used copy that ...

Great book but hard to find a used copy that hasn't lost the 3.5 inch floppy disk with the sample MIDI files. And even if the disk is included, who still has a computer with a 3.5 inch floppy disk drive? I sure don't, so I had to take my diskette in to the local computer repair place and have them burn the data onto a CD for me. What do you do if you get a copy of the book without the disk or if you're unable to read the data because your computer can't handle a 3.5 inch floppy disk? Simple. Contact me and I will promptly email the MIDI files to you, no charge, good karma and all that, one musician to another. How To Improve Your MIDi Files!

I've made a large number of midi files via the trial and error method and used them regularly in live performances. But, until now, I could not find a good book telling me how to make better, more professional, midi's. Some "midi manuals" gave a few tips, but were mostly devoted to a general overview of midi music. The Midi Files gives an excellent intro to basic midi knowledge, but it then goes on to provide a wealth of practical information on how to actually produce better files. Be sure you get a copy with the floppy disk that comes with the book. It has dozens of examples of how the techniques sound when properly applied. The book references the floppy's examples and is just a great tool to get you producing better files, starting with the channel headers and going right through the various techniques to the final entries on the channels. If, like me, you are someone with a little bit of knowledge looking for clear assistance on how to make better files, this is the best book I have found to date (November 2008). This is the only book I have found with this range and depth of practical advice, examples, and background explanation. I almost let the 1996 copyright date throw me off but I am glad I didn't because this is a far better book than the books I have purchased that were printed in 2005 and 2007. Scott.

I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for publishing this book, "The Midi Files", by Rob Young. I'm just past 40 years of age. I've been working with computers my whole life. I've been a musician longer than that. But I only recently took the plunge into Midi. And it was hopeless. I couldn't make head or tails out of the documentation that came with either the synthesiser or the sequencer. I have always been able to pick things up on my own, with the help of the manuals. It wasn't happening. I was really getting down about it.
But then I remembered I'd bought this book.And man, what a book.It is such a good book I can hardly believe it. It really saved my life. Not only does Mr. Young show a great understanding, technically, of the MIDI standard and its various interpretations in hardware and software, and of the pitfalls that we new MIDI exploresrs will be faced with. But he does it all with such amazing musical sense too.
So I don't know what else to say. Thanks. From my heart. This foray into the MIDI world really means alot to me. I've been thinking about it and planning on it for a long time. I've been needing and wanting to get back to music, especial composition, and this was how I was going to do it. When I finally went for it, and then it was going so badly, I was really down on myself. I felt stupid. I thought maybe I was too old for this. But then this book, this one simple book, changed everything. It finally helped me to unlock the door. I still have a long way to go. But at least I'm developing. I'm so appreciative, it's hard to express it. But I hope I have done so, in some small way.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly...

The Good: Ever want to know the story of Ireland from day one to 1913?? Read this book! Emily Lawless covers Irish history thoroughly and seemlessly as she moves from one year to the next, covering a myriad of players and events all written in a way that is easy to understand. If you are a casual historian like I am, or just love our beloved Green Isle, this is a must read for you!

The Bad: Not necessarily due to the author, but there are a few times that some players get confusing. Ireland's history is so vast and cluttered with tyranny and heroism alike that I found myself getting lost at times. I believe that Emily, with the room she had, handled all this wel though.

The Ugly: As I was nearing the end of the book, and rounding out the 1800's, I was anxious to see what she had written about Ireland's 1916 heroic stand against the occupying British. I was astounded to find that the books stops several years before that happens! Now this was a Kindle download so I didn't get to see the publish date but assume it was pre-1916 because she asks in wonderment what the next years will bring. So that was a little disappoionting and anyone looking for information on 1916 will not get it here.

The Verdict: Well worth the read. This book was informative and entertaining without being bloated by the author's speculation or feelings on the issues.

Difficult to follow

This book is difficult to read. The author jumps around from point to historical point as if you could read his mind. You might be able to follow the book if you are already intimately familiar with Irish history; if not, you'll find some enlightening sections and some Holy-Mackerel, WTF sections.

Overall, I know more about the homeland of my grandparents and that's good.

This is worth reading for the language alone. The author has a wonderful way of describing places, people, and events. Even though I am not enthralled with the subject of Irish history, I keep returning to the book because I enjoy reading it.

What A Great First Book

I really loved this book it had a little bit of everything. Del was one stubborn human who was having trouble coming to terms of being a male aliens mate ( Quinn ) until faced with someone else being interested in Quinn. Kudos to Christine Wright on her first book. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Great book!

This is the first published book by this author, although you would never know that Christine Wright wasn’t a seasoned writer.
Del Foster wakes up to the surprise of his life. Finding out that he has accepted what he at first thinks of as a position on a starship, but finds out that he is mated to the Captain instead. The plot is fast paced and the surprises keep coming as Del tries his best to escape his fate. Although once he begins to learn more about his mate, Captain Quinn; the less he wants to leave and the more he wants to explore what being a mate to his Captain means.
Captain Quinn is a very respected and feared member of his species. He shows his new mate Del a surprising amount of patience while trying to keep him out of trouble (that Del finds himself in anyway), and disciplining him to teach him how to live this new life. Love this story! Very original and I can’t wait for the next installment.
Great job Christine Wright, Keep up the good work!
