This book centers on one of the most tragic, horrifying, and important pieces of the history of the Western world: the transatlantic slave trade.  Unlike any other system of commerce in world history, the primary commodities exchanged in the slave trade were people, and this fact has implications not only for how the trade was initiated, conducted, conceptualized, and concluded, but also for how we make sense of it in the present.  For on one hand, the Atlantic slave trade was indeed trade, and as such it bears comparison with and was related to the expansion of a variety of global commercial networks.  On the other hand, unlike other commodities driving cross-cultural exchange in world history, slaves were human, with all this implies about their vulnerability to pain and discomfort, their capacity to resist, their real or potential relationships with sellers and buyers, and--most fundamentally to those sellers and buyers--their labor power.  Understanding the Atlantic slave trade thus requires studying economic and political history, dealing largely with those who bought and sold slaves, as well as the social and cultural history of slavers, the enslaved, and the societies they lived in and built. 

About the Author
Lisa A. Lindsay holds a Ph.D. in African history from University of Michigan and teaches at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Before developing her scholarship on the slave trade, she published Working with Gender: Wage Labor and Social Change in Southwestern Nigeria, Men and Masculinities in Modern Africa (co-edited with Stephen F. Miescher), and scholarly articles on colonial Nigeria.  She has held fellowships from the American Council of Learned Socities, the National Humanities Center, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Sources like this are crucial, but I find the fact that the Arab slave trade was larger and more lethal doesn't get enough mention. I think people across the world would do well to realize that the West has reformed from their lesser crimes more than the Arab world has for their greater ones.

About the Author
Chris Moore was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1980 and died tragically young in Amsterdam where he was writing in the summer of 2016. In his short life, Moore became internationally known for his work as a writer, podcaster, and advocate of a new way of thinking about physical training and strength. He was a beloved member of the Barbell Shrugged podcast, host and writer of the Barbell Buddha podcast and blog, and a successful medical writer, having completed a Masters in Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Memphis. Better to buy the original version

I got the original edition of Through My Eyes the day it came out and I read it cover to cover in one sitting. It was a great story and a great read. When I saw that a young readers edition would be out in time for Christmas I ordered a copy for my nephew ~ who loves to read and is a huge Tebow fan. I expected this version to be more simplified than it was. In fact I didn't see much of a difference at all. I recommend getting the original.

Bought for my 10 year old son who loves sports and asked me for this book for Christmas because he knows Tim is a Christian, How wonderful to have real life role models in society for our chidren to look up too, so lacking these days.

Excellent book for young athletes

I am not sure why people are rating this book so low just because they didn't realize it was the youth version of the original book. This is skewing the rating that this book should get! If they did a simple search for "Through My Eyes" or even "Tim Tebow" both versions show up and if you look at both books it is very easy to determine which one is the adult version.

I have read both and this version is an excellent read for any young athlete. A great combination of sports, faith, and family stories. His dedication and drive to be the best that he can be is an inspiration to all youth, not just athletes.

Too Basic for the Seasoned Engineer. Recommend: "Guide to Energy Management"

This book would be O.K. for an engineer just finding his/her way, it provides a good basic overview. As a licensed and LEED certified mechanical engineer, I bought this book to serve as a refresher in preparation to retest for the C.E.M, for reinstatement. After reading it cover to cover, I don't feel as though I got what I was expecting from this book. Update: The book to buy is "Guide to Energy Management", by Capehart, Turner and Kennedy.

Ross lays social and political change side by side with technical change. He argues that the French revolution, due to the fervour and loyalty it inspired in its participants, led to huge citizen armies of devolved command which were able to make use of new tactics that swept the poorly paid and poorly treated professional armies of their enemies from the field. Shortly after the Napoleonic wars other European countries experienced similar social change and by the middle of the Nineteenth Century these massive conscript armies were equipped with breech-loading rifles and more powerful artillery. The battlefield of the late 1860's had become a place where close infantry formations could not survive for long in the linear formations of the past.

Dated But Useful

As it was printed in the late 1970s, Steven Ross's well written book, covering from 1740 to 1866, is now somewhat dated but still interesting and useful. It is flawed in some of its conclusions, and it neglects issues of weapons effectiveness as well as the psychological features of battle in favor of an almost exclusive focus on formations and other 'nuts and bolts' issues. Use of columns for maneuver and attack are well covered as are the the use of skirmishers and changes in doctrine of various Western armies over time. The author gives many examples from battles of the era. So this book is a good introduction to tactics of the era but understandably shouldn't be taken as the 'be all end all' on the subject. It is best read in combination with Nosworthy's and Muir's more recent books for a fuller, more accurate view.
