The Titanic, that enormous luxury ship that sank on her maiden voyage in April 1912, has for many decades fascinated people all over the world. Now, as movies and musicals are telling new stories about the vessel, curiosity about the Titanic is piquing again. This unusual collection of documents is not a "book" in the classic sense, but a set of facsimiles of papers related to the disaster that have been lovingly reproduced from the archives of the public record office in London. You will find the deck plans to the ship, a passenger's account of his escape, a certificate written a month before the disaster stating that there were only enough lifeboats to save a third of the passengers, the Titanic's final telegram, and commentary and editorials written shortly after the ship's sinking. All are made to look as much like the originals as possible. Titanic: The Official Story provides a unique view into an important event of the 20th century; as you thumb through the papers in this box, you'll feel a chapter of history coming to life in your hands.

The first telegram, 11:45 P.M., April 14, 1912:

Cgd - Sos. From M. G. Y.

We have struck iceberg sinking fast come to our assistance.
Position Lat. 41.46 n. Lon. 50.14. w.

The final telegram, 1:40 A.M., April 15, 1912:

SOS SOS CQD - MGY

We are sinking fast passengers being put into boats

Alfred Fernand Omont, a first class passenger, offered this statement to the British Commission of Enquiry:

"While I was still on the boat deck, a [life] boat was let down. The 1st officer saw me and asked me if I wanted to get in. Some of the passengers shouted to me not to get in as they had such confidence in the ship. I saw that the sea was very calm, and on calm reason I thought it better to jump into the boat and see what would happen. I jumped two or three yards, and landed in the boat anyhow. We were twenty nine in the boat. The boat could not have held more than thirty in any case. I personally consider and state that the idea of putting sixty people in a boat or on a raft is ridiculous. I have a photograph in my possession which shows how ridiculous it is to attempt to put 50 or sixty persons in one of these boats or rafts. I consider it a monstrosity to state that one could put 60 persons in a boat, in safety. . . .

"When we were in the water we started to row away from the ship. I was rowing. We had 22 women on board. . . . We rowed up to about 150 yards from the ship. We saw the ship sink gradually--she sank to starboard".

Excellent primary source historical information.
By hmabowman@juno.com
If what you like are action, adventure, and dramatic illistrations, this is not for you. If you want a contemporary view, to hold history in your hand and be brought back to 1912, this is most definately for you. Yet there is a certain emotion in examening Titanic's registration, her survey report, the port by port clearance papers of newly embarked passengers, and the other narratives and reports. The Harland and Wolff plans are the best I have yet found, while the 74 page report of the British Court of Investigation is fascinating, if somewhat dry, reading, from both a technical and human perspective. This is a must, not only for serious Titanic people, but for anyone interested in the history of the era.

A Historical Collection of Great Documents
By Marcel J
I received this item as a gift many years ago, and I have preserved it since. It is truly a collectors item for its wealth of information pertaining to the Titanic disaster. There are 18 documents (don't let the number fool you into thinking that is minimal) of full reproductions of all the pertinent information concerning the tragedy.

What you can hope to get in this box set:

A full introductory bulletin spanning 15 pages which beautifully illustrates the box contents. In addition to a brief summary of the maiden voyage, there is information on "further reading", a little blurb on each item in the box set, and an appendix of "Particulars of Ships Built By Harland and Wolff-Entries for the Olympic and Titanic."

The Box Contents
1. Transcript of Register for Transmission to Registrar-General of Shipping and Seamen.
2. Report of Survey of an Emigrant Ship
3. Certificates of Clearance of an Emigrant Ship
4. Deck Plans of the Titanic
5. Report of the British Commission of Inquiry into the loss of the Titanic
6. Telegrams sent to the SS Birma by the SS Titanic as she sank
7. Correspondence from the White Star Line to the Board of Trade concerning the loss of the Titanic
8. The Response of the popular press- "The Titanic Crime"- editorial in the New York Evening Journal
9. The response of the union leader- letter from the Dock, Wharf, Riverside and General Worker's Union
10. The politician's response- notice of a Parliamentary Question to the President of the Board of Trade
11. Sample of returns of passengers drowned - First, Second and Third class
12. Alfred Omont's account of his escape from the Titanic
13. Digest of Testimony given at the hearing into the loss of the Titanic before the Sub-committee of the Committee on Commerce of the United States Senate
14. Report on the Senate Committee inquiry report into the loss of the Titanic
15. Copy of a letter from Stanley Lord, Captain of the SS Californian, to the Board of Trade
16. Statement of Claim and Verdict in the case of Ryan v. the Oceanic Steam Navigation Co. Ltd
17. Letter to the Board of Trade from the General Manager of the White Star Line concerning films on the sinking of the SS Titanic
18. Photograph of survivor from the Titanic

All in all, this is an excellent compendium of information concerning Titanic which should be of interest to any enthusiast or history buff. It may be slightly dry reading at times, but the information gathered here is invaluable and should definitely be collected.

The box is slightly flimsy and will bend and contort with age, but the documents remain intact if obvious care is taken with them.

Get it! You won't regret it!

Unreadable and therefore worthless
By Amazon Customer
This is a review from the Kindle edition of the text. The text must have been ripped from a Google scan since every page break is heralded by a ",, Google". This Kindle edition is laughably bad scan. Wacky-parsed letters occur practically every other sentence (i.e. "wliich" instead of "which") clearly indicating that there was no editor overseeing the quality of this scan. I don't understand how Amazon gets away with charging for something they obviously put no effort at all into producing.

SURVEY OF THE GREAT SOCIAL ENGINEERS' IDEAS EMBEDDED IN SOCIETY
By Aspic
The Story of Utopias
by Lewis Mumford
reviewed by Martin Knox
Mumford is more concerned to present ideas for utopias of reconstruction, that alter relationships permanently through education, adaptation and so forth, than utopias of escape, that are evaluated by their ability to return people to reality, such as Alice In Wonderland.
Utopian ideas are preserved opaquely in the political, social and economic fabric of nations, where myths and partial utopias linger from experiments, often centuries earlier and in blueprints for tried and untried living, preserved in a number of books, described by Mumford as about 20 different utopias, that vary greatly in the detail from one to another.
In The Story Of Utopias, Mumford surveys cultural landscapes to trace preconceptions of the major utopias and synthesise an independent view of the contribution of each utopia. It is an ambition that is sometimes achieved, at others this reader is confused by the myriad allusions to contemporary matters, with insufficient description of the utopia under discussion. He also assumes that the reader is already familiar with. or will pick up and read immediately, the utopian works under discussion. Mumford's purpose, especially in the later chapters, seems to be to deduce constraints on utopian designs so that they can succeed in reality.
The Story Of Utopias attempts to collate the major visions on an undated timeline, comparing and contrasting design variable settings. These include contexts, land ownership, urban layout, economic relationships, industry, consumption, lifestyles, groups, communities, families, inheritance and roles of individuals.
Mumford distinguishes Plato's recipe for moderate living with Socrates' provision for growth with an 'inflamed constitution'. The issue is still familiar today, as an argument between capitalists, who want huge cities to grow even larger, while they are opposed by human welfare-oriented citizens concerned about deteriorating lifestyles as population density increases.
Thomas More's utopia Amaurot, in the realm of Henry VIII, is austere. It is organised into groups of thirty families, each 10-16 people, ruled by a magistrate, rather like an Oxford college but with factories and workshops. They eat together, accompanied by music. Gambling and hunting are the province of the lowest cast: butchers and slaves. The chief end of a man is to grow to the fullest stature of his species.
Johann Andreae proposed Christianopolis as an artisan democracy. There is a conscious application of science to industrial processes. There is no money, nor wealth. The highest respect is for morals and piety, allied with Calvinism.
Charles Fourier's utopia The Associationists has institutions that permit man's original nature to function freely, motivated by 'passions'. He abolishes the individual household and has an industrial army of golden youths and maidens who make good public works not war, reminiscent of Chairman Mao's Red Army.
James Buckingham conceived a model town association resulting in a Garden City, called Letchworth in the UK, which propagated Welwyn Garden City and may still be propagating garden cities elsewhere.
Theodor Hertzka's utopia Freeland was the basis of an attempt to colonize a section of Africa he selected. It failed. It was to be an individual utopia on a social foundation of certain laws and statutes. It was a type of socialism based not on revolution but construction of a co-operative society. It would allow people to be free but not free to enslave others through wealth and power. It was organised around machinery and Mumford's view is that the means has become an end.
Etienne Cabet's 1845 Voyage En Icarie had 100 provinces each with 10 communes. The capital would be a city like Paris with 4 quarters and 60 communes, all organised for war. The inhabitants were to enjoy a sophisticated metropolitan lifestyle, under the control of a dictator and according to Mumford had more influence on embryonic Soviet Russia than Marx.
Edward Bellamy in 1887 forecast institutions for the year 2000.Every person was to receive 4000 pounds per annum for his needs and must work to age 45 in a cog-and-wheel production system. Shopping is by ordering from state stores, not unlike the Argos tradition in the UK. There was dignity and heroism in labour and artisanship, but no scholars or scientists. He was scathing about the Westminster adversarial system:
'The game of ins and outs, political government, has disappeared; when the community wants a bridge or a new field, it is competent to decide without lining up in a purely fictitious antagonism.'(p71)
H G Wells' vivid fantasy: 'A Modern Utopia' has four classes: the kinetic, the poietic (intellectuals), the base and the dull. who were exported to islands where they could practice fraud, chicane, and violence to their hearts' content.
Francois Rabelais' work Gargantua sought to provide for the good life living in an 'abbey' with tennis, fruit trees, parks, deer, archery, rich tapestries and splendid costumes.
Next came a society revolved around The Country House, with its chapel, its art gallery, its theatre and its gymnasium. The Country House was like a robber's hoard or a hunter's cache, with every indulgence for passive enjoyment. Possessions there were not earned, they were inherited. It was a prescription for The Acquisitive Society with a ruling class who had no occupation valued by society - the antithesis of Plato's Republic.
Charles Dickens' Coketown supplied material goods to The Country House. It had: a mill, a factory and was laid out by an engineer, with a jail, an infirmary and a sanatorium.
These two were held together by the idolum (idea) of the National State, a utopia that persists today. Wanderers are settled and goods brought to them for consumption. The biggest city is Megalopolis, where people have ideals of paying their taxes, serving in the armed forces, eating only nationally advertised foods, never buying from the producer when we might buy from a middleman, reading their own country's literature, never desiring any other climate, never trying to find in other cultures what they missed in theirs,
Mumford lists the partisan utopias which are the foundation of political movements. He says that the humanists:
'looked upon human institutions as external to men; ...straitjackets that cunning rulers had thrown over the community to make sane and kindly people behave like madmen. If one devised neat political constitutions, with plenty of checks and balances, all would be good.' p97
Mumford is also sceptical that there can be a worthwhile utopia because its inventor will ally himself with one or more groups and deal out harsh treatment to others. He says that utopians have produced paper not new worlds:
'They were the tactics of a general who would go into battle without training his army; they would have a demagogue who talks of a million men springing up overnight.(p97)'
Apart from practical concerns, Mumford has not applied a consistent criterion of utopian success, such as community peace. On the contrary. he has passed over all kinds of armed camps and social discrimination without a murmur. He seems tongue in cheek about the possibility of a good utopia.
'Utopians have land and natural resources belonging to the community, no one is let off work, the reckless and ill-bred shall not burden the community with the support of their offspring while those of finer capacity are neglected or overwhelmed in numbers.'(p119)
Science is venerated in a few utopias but Mumford does not regard it as necessary to glue utopias together. He distinguishes Science from Art as different idola (ideas) and he suggests that Art offers a broader picture. He says that idealism and Science operate in different compartments but happiness depends upon their combination. He notes that Science itself has degenerated, presumably by its popularisation.
The breadth of this thin book is astounding, so it is ungenerous to fault lack of depth. In places Lewis Mumford has soared over his subject with an eagle eye. At others he has floundered with a mishmash of utopias that he has been unable to reconcile.
The writing is precise, colourful and easy to read.
In retrospect, I would have benefitted from using this book in designing my utopia in The Grass Is Always Browner. In particular, Mumford's view of a utopia as a grand adventure, with a coherent view of the human condition, is more visionary than mine. I settled for long extrapolations into the future of contemporary trends.
I recommend you buy this book: it is one to read and then to keep for reference. It can be used as a guide book to further reading on the subject, or to reveal the origins of many ideas embedded in our society.
The blurb says:
'As an anthology that invites readers to immerse themselves in the masterpieces of the literary giants, it is a must-have addition to any library.

Waste of time and money.
By YellowBlueGreen
I'm unofficially studying Ayurveda until I can go to school for it, and I am now pregnant. I was looking for a book that would help me understand pregnancy in an Ayurvedic context, so I was very glad to find this one, especially since it has a forward by Dr. Vasant Lad, the gentleman whose materials I'm devouring.

With that being said, I was completely disappointed with this book. I've edited my original review to this one to be useful to others, and highlight the positives, even if I thought there were few (as I was too asleep this morning to have attempted it, but did anyways...).

PROS:
- A westerner tackled this subject in this context, and for that she deserves some credit.
- It's a simple introduction to Ayurveda and to pregnancy. There is a briefing of the 3 basic constitutions, and of the 3 trimesters.
- There are suggested Yoga positions.
- There is a list of herbs to avoid during pregnancy.

I'm being very generous about the pros..

CONS:
- Chances are, if you're pregnant, you'll want a way more in depth book than this one, and same if you're interested in Ayurveda. It is literally like the author took the two subjects and kept them totally separate, or like she just started to study either of them, and put what ever she found for free on the Internet into this book. It does NOT present pregnancy from an Ayurvedic viewpoint. There isn't even a mention of how, regarding anemia, Vata types tend to be the ones with iron deficiency, Pitta B12, and Kapha B6. I know she can't diagnose, and one certainly should look for an Ayurvedic doctor before making any conclusions too quickly, but still!

- The list of herbs to avoid is a joke. It is literally a list of just the herbs. There is no mention of why one would want to avoid it, or if any constitution might benefit from it anyways, under the supervision of an Ayurvedic doctor of course. For instance, one of the reasons Burdock is not recommended during pregnancy is because it can block iron absorption (iirc). Some Kaphas are actually so loaded in iron that burdock could be medicine for them, maybe more so if they're a Pitta-Kapha!

- There is no discussion on which pregnancy experiences are associated with which dosha: nausea, acne, pregnancy mask, postpartum hemorrhaging, mood swings, etc., might all be more common in Pitta types from what I've gathered from other sources, whereas constipation, insomnia, fears, anxiety a Vata thing, and water retention, weight gain, gestational diabetes a Kapha thing. There is also no mention of Dosha specific remedies if any of those were to occur!

Love how this book relates yoga philosophy to pregnancy and motherhood as well. Not just a list of asanas, but includes well described practices appropriate for each stage, including but not limited to, pranayama and mantra. Now on my must read list for expecting families.

“Bell is at the forefront of a rethinking of Christianity in America.” (Time magazine)

“One of the country’s most influential evangelical pastors.” (New York Times)

“One of the nation’s rock-star-popular young pastors.” (USA Today)

“Equal parts prophetic warning and call to action, Jesus Wants to Save Christians exhorts Jesus’ followers to sacrifice their comforts and hear the ‘cry of the oppressed’-the hungry and poor about whom God cares deeply.” (Grand Rapids Press)

“Bell and Golden present a clarion call for a justice emphasis within Christianity and, given the nightmarish developments in the U.S. and the world, it could not have come at a better time!” (Spirituality and Practice)

From the Back Cover

"We want you to discover the Bible as its own best commentary. We offer you a way to read the Bible that doesn't require a library or a preacher or a politician or an academic to interpret for you. Once justice is seen as the thread woven into the fabric of biblical history, the whole Bible becomes much clearer. Justice is the issue when God redeems Israel from Pharaoh. Justice is at the heart of the Sinai law and justice is what Israel must show the world as a kingdom of priests. Justice is the measure the Jews failed to meet in their days of power and empire in Jerusalem. It was justice the prophets proclaimed as the way of return during the exile of the Jews in Babylon and it was justice that Jesus incarnated."

A Dubious Disciple Book Review
By Dubious Disciple
Ouch. Several months ago, Harper One sent me a short collection of Rob Bell reprints to review. I slowly worked my way through them, enjoying each one, and somehow left this one sitting on the shelves. Too many other obligations. I just now picked it up, and read it in one sitting.

I couldn't put it down. Forget Velvet Elvis. Forget Love Wins. This 180-page sermon, this little obscure work, is for Bible groupies Bell's real masterpiece. It's definitely my new favorite, so maybe that says something about co-author Don Golden, a name I hadn't come across before.

From the Exodus, to the Temple construction, to the Eucharist, Bell and Golden reveal a surprising thread that weaves its way throughout the Bible. This "new perspective " opens up what the Bible means to Americans today, living in the world's most powerful nation, boasting the greatest military, yet holding the strongest responsibility for the world's impoverished. America is an empire, and the Bible has a lot to say about empires.

"I hope you see that there is a common humanity we share with everybody alive today, and everybody who has come before us," writes Bell in the preface. This little book accomplishes just that.

Rob Bell's book and all his work has restored not only my faith and hope but returned me to something I thought was lost.

I agree with Bell most churches in America and beyond need to wake up and stop taking their congregations money and build new buildings...instead they need to look after the poor.

Aesopic Conversations: Popular Tradition, Cultural Dialogue, and the Invention of Greek Prose (Martin Classical Lectures), by Leslie Kurke

Examining the figure of Aesop and the traditions surrounding him, Aesopic Conversations offers a portrait of what Greek popular culture might have looked like in the ancient world. What has survived from the literary record of antiquity is almost entirely the product of an elite of birth, wealth, and education, limiting our access to a fuller range of voices from the ancient past. This book, however, explores the anonymous Life of Aesop and offers a different set of perspectives. Leslie Kurke argues that the traditions surrounding this strange text, when read with and against the works of Greek high culture, allow us to reconstruct an ongoing conversation of "great" and "little" traditions spanning centuries.

Evidence going back to the fifth century BCE suggests that Aesop participated in the practices of nonphilosophical wisdom (sophia) while challenging it from below, and Kurke traces Aesop's double relation to this wisdom tradition. She also looks at the hidden influence of Aesop in early Greek mimetic or narrative prose writings, focusing particularly on the Socratic dialogues of Plato and the Histories of Herodotus. Challenging conventional accounts of the invention of Greek prose and recognizing the problematic sociopolitics of humble prose fable, Kurke provides a new approach to the beginnings of prose narrative and what would ultimately become the novel.

Delving into Aesop, his adventures, and his crafting of fables, Aesopic Conversations shows how this low, noncanonical figure was--unexpectedly--central to the construction of ancient Greek literature.

Review
Winner of the 2012 Charles J. Goodwin Award of Merit, American Philological Association

Shortlisted for the 2012 Runciman Award, Anglo-Hellenic League

"Kurke's learned and humane book aims to excavate the vibrant popular tradition assumed by Aesop's fables but now largely buried, and restore it to its place in cultural history. . . . Aesopic Conversations is a brilliant and original book, which will transform the way we read early Greek literature."--Tim Whitmarsh, London Review of Books

"There are large ideas in this book. Critical faculties will be honed by reading it."--Vivienne Gray, Bryn Mawr Classical Review

"With her keen eye for symbolic expressions of ideological conflict, Kurke has thrust Aesop into the center of major political, philosophical and literary developments of the fifth and fourth centuries. Precisely because of its ambitions, many of the claims this book makes want weighing. But let it be said that if Kurke sometimes pushes the evidence, she never forces it, and she always gives space to alternative views in substantial footnotes."--Andrew Ford, International Journal of the Classical Tradition

"[Kurke] consistently succeeds in keeping the main lines of her argument clearly in view. Cumulatively her discussion is both rich and persuasive and often quite witty. The Aesop who emerges is altogether a much more complex, influential, and interesting figure than the homespun rustic narrator of 'Aesop's fables.'"--Andrew Szegedy-Maszak, New England Classical Journal

"[A] thoughtful and thought-provoking discussion, here and throughout the book: Kurke makes us look anew at familiar texts, and that is what literary criticism is for."--John Taylor, Anglo-Hellenic Review

"Kurke's . . . approach to the text(s) of the Life of Aesop [is] groundbreaking and sophisticated. While there have been a number of valuable studies of the Life of Aesop in recent decades, few have attempted to grapple in earnest with the specific challenges posed by its anonymity, textual multiplicity, and popular character."--Jeremy B. Lefkowitz, Phoenix

"Kurke's is a very distinctive voice. Her scholarship is always trenchant, thoughtful, and articulate. Her argument is clear, even when intricate and extended, and it has no Aesopic aggressions or sleights of hand. . . . There is much to admire and enjoy here."--Simon Goldhill, Classical World

"Aesopic Conversations is a brilliant book overall, rich in specialized information, and drawing on accurate data and references."--Filomena Vasconcelos, European Legacy

From the Back Cover

"Leslie Kurke is one of the sharpest and most original scholars of ancient Greek literary culture writing today. Informed, intellectually precise, and always engaged, her work has long been a pleasure and an education. Here she brings all of her considerable theoretical experience to the life and work of that least refined of ancient authors: Aesop. A hick, a foreigner, a slave, Aesop speaks with no kind of authority and yet by all accounts he is wise. Kurke takes this central conundrum as the starting point for a wide-ranging exploration of what it means in ancient Greek culture to be highbrow or lowbrow, gold or dross. Along the way there are some surprising diversions, numerous clever insights, and quite a lot of sophisticated and not so sophisticated fun."--James Davidson, University of Warwick

Aesopic Conversations is a masterpiece. Breathtakingly original, the book illuminates the dynamics of the Aesopic tradition and the intellectual history of Greece. It succeeds in showing that the seemingly marginal figure of Aesop, a fable-telling alleged criminal and itinerant slave, had a central role in the invention of a fundamental medium for all of Western history--serious nonfictional prose."--Richard P. Martin, Stanford University

"This brilliant and exciting book revises major parts of ancient Greek cultural and literary history by revealing the important influence of the Aesopic tradition. Kurke tackles big issues and treats topics with thoroughness and nuance."--William Hansen, professor emeritus, Indiana University

About the Author
Leslie Kurke is professor of classics and comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley. Her books include "Coins, Bodies, Games, and Gold" (Princeton).

A magnificent work of scholarship
By Romulus
This is a magnificent work of historical and literary exploration into the largely unexplored traditions adhering to Aesop and their influence on the earliest forays into prose by the ancient Greeks.

Was Aesop a real person, or only a figure of legend? On this question, Kurke is "agnostic." Her primary interest is in the so-called Life of Aesop, an anonymously authored biography of the slave who became a sage; this peculiar book dates from around the 1st or 2nd century CE, but may convey traditional stories about Aesop that go much further back, predating Plato. You should probably read the Life of Aesop before diving into Kurke's theories, or read it along with this book.

This is by far the most extensive analysis of the Life of Aesop yet published, so for this reader (an amateur Aesopist) it's pure catnip. Certain aspects of the Life have long puzzled me; what is the exact nature of Aesop's relationship with his master, and why does his visit to Delphi turn out so badly? Kurke's examination of these issues is the most extensive I've read and her explanations are both convincing and exciting. She's not afraid to advance some bold, original ideas, or to make a few fanciful conjectures, but her risk-taking pays off. Kurke's suggestion that Aesop "was a popular contender for inclusion" in the list of the Seven Sages (p. 135) is a provocative idea I have not encountered anywhere else, and her linkage of the "stolen" vessel planted on Aesop by the Delphians with the phiale of the Seven Sages (p. 237) is downright brilliant.

The second part of the book looks at the writings of Plato, then Herodotus; in the works of both authors, Kurke sees the invisible influence of Aesop. Why invisible? Kurke asserts that these authors not only used Aesopic methods of storytelling, but also deliberately concealed that usage--and she tells you why they did so. This is a bit like using infrared reflectography on a medieval manuscript to read the palimpsest beneath; here, Kurke's "technology" is her wide-ranging knowledge of the literature and of the fiendish complexities of the original Greek. In this rarefied arena, an amateur like myself simply has to follow along, and look forward to assessments by Kurke's peers.

Kurke's arguments are meticulously constructed. Her prose is dense and her vocabulary sometimes highly esoteric, but there is an elegance to her writing that makes reading this book a pleasure. I looked forward to immersing myself in Aesopic Conversations each time I picked it up, and I am sad to have finished it (though I know I will be coming back to reread various passages over and over again for years to come).

Creative and insightful
By DKO
I read this book with a special interest in Plato, so I wanted to know more about Greek prose traditions in popular forms, as well as about wisdom traditions. Kurke is a wonderful scholar --her book on praise poetry is terrific, The Traffic in Praise --and this book will be a classic for classicists.

Review from the Publisher
By A Customer
Few books contain as important a message as does this autobiography and revelations of Sr. Mary of St. Peter (1816-1848) about the powerful devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus. The express purpose of this devotion is to offset the blasphemies and outrages of "Revolutionary men" (the Communists) - through whom God is allowing the world to be chastised for its disbelief - as well as of atheists and freethinkers, for blasphemy and profanations of Sundays by Christians. Specifically, this devotion is the divine tool given by God to defeat Communism, and an unfailing method for individuals in appealing to God through prayer. Our Lord gave Sr. Mary a short but powerful prayer called "The Golden Arrow" by which a person can "shoot directly into the Heart of God." The editor of the book states that this devotion brought St. Therese, the "Little Flower", to her great sanctity. Contains the 9 powerful promises attached to this special devotion.

The Golden Arrow The Revelations of Sr. Mary of St. Peter
By M. ODonnell
The devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus is still not very well known but indeed a devotion for our troubled times. Considering the date of the revelations (1840's) the message is even more imminent in these perilous times. Sr. Mary of St. Peter (1816-1848) was a very holy nun but often plaqued with spiritual dryness, darkness, and temptations. The same mark of those given a heavy cross to carry in reparation for lost souls and carrying a burden for mankind. On page 184 Our Lord states to Sr. Mary, "I give you My Face and My Heart. I give you my Blood, and I open to you My Wounds." The corresponding devotions are the Holy Face, Sacred Heart, Precious Blood, Holy Wounds, and the Divine Mercy devotion.

The Holy Face Message continues with, "The Story of Sister Maria Pierina De Micheli Missionary-Messenger of the Holy Face of Jesus". Sr. Maria Pierina (1890-1945) was responsible for having the Holy Face Medal and the Feast of the Holy Face recognized by the Pope on Shrove Tuesday. The medal of the Holy Face of Jesus was requested by Our Blessed Mother (1938) as a "weapon of defense, a shield of courage, a guarantee of love and of mercy in these times of sexuality and hatred towards God and the Church."

Just as Sr. Faustina (1905-1938)was given the Divine Mercy Message especially important for our times. Sister Josefa Menendez had proceeded her (1890-1923).

... to piece together the needed information it would be great. Back in the UBC days
By Ray W.
If the IBC would go back to logical locations and cross referencing rather than the multiple cross referencing where we have to go to a half dozen locations to attempt to piece together the needed information it would be great. Back in the UBC days, one Code book the size of a thick paperback gave us the information we needed. Now we have to buy multiple books, poorly cross referenced which seem to be written like a puzzle and when put together approach the IRS standards in quantity of words.

Do you know the current building codes?
Most dudes in the trades do not and the codes changes over the years as we come up with better building concepts.
This is a great reference to have at your desk or in your truck so you are ready for the inspections, the first time.
I also use it to point out mistakes or things that were looked over.
Big Tommy says, if you are not sure, then this has the answers.

Work on existing buildings?
By Ant'ny
Does anyone really love a code book? Maybe not, but it is an essential part of day to day life of an architect. I do like the fact that Amazon was right priced and quick with delivery! The existing building code is an essential reference if you work on existing structures, the older the more appropriate this code.
