Not for the U.S.--but fine for the UK

If you're looking for a book that covers car ownership in a general sort of way, you're in luck--provided you live in the UK. Because this book is designed exclusively for people owning and driving a car in Britain.

I am not one of those people: I live and own a car in the U.S. and was looking for a book on general car ownership; American car-owners, leave this book to your British counterparts.

If you do own a car in the UK, here are the chapters, and a few subheadings:
1. Buying and selling (finance, buying new/old)
2. Getting on the road (learning to drive, paperwork, insurance)
3. Using your car (car security, economical driving, bad weather, emergencies)
4. Know your car (engine, fuel systems, transmission, wheels and tyres)
5. Caring for your car (bodywork, wheels, service schedules, DIY servicing, preparing for an MoT test)

Plus Appendices A, B, and C, on troubleshooting, glossary, and useful contacts, respectively.

Now, there are some bits of information in this book that could be valuable to an American car owner, but the overlap is minimal. If I lived in the UK, I might give it 4 or 5 stars, but I gave it 3 since I was buying it on Amazon.com (not co.uk) and there was no evidence that it was intended for a British audience. I am returning it--hopefully someone else will find it more useful.

The Secret of the Golden Cowrie

Connie is set on proving herself to her older brother, Dan. She feels like it's her chance when she goes on a spur-of-the-moment trip with her mother and Dan, to help out their Aunt Laura who fell down and got hurt. Or wait, did she fall, or was she pushed by an intruder like she claims? Hearing rumors that Aunt Laura is getting older and might be losing her mind a little, Connie is surprised at how witty and full of life Aunt Laura turns out to be.

Aunt Laura's huge shell collection is a sight to behold, and Connie is surprised when she finds that one of the shells is missing, and there might just be a way she can find it. Excited at the chance to prove herself, Connie dives in head first. Stella, the lady who's also staying with them and befriends Connie, also offers to teach Connie some about photography, which makes Connie feel like she could walk on air. Also, Ricky, a boy Connie meets turns out to be fun to hang around. But when there's another break-in, Connie realizes it's a little bit more serious than she had thought.

When riddles, secret doors and missing shells are all combined, a mystery sits waiting to be solved. Will Connie be able to solve it by herself? Or will she have to get help? And what about Aunt Laura, is she actually crazy after all?

This is the first book I read by Gloria Repp, which I read when I was about 10. A few years later I ended up making my own riddle for my little siblings, reading this book to them as one of the clues. There are parts when I was totally frustrated with Connie, wishing she could see what was right in front of her face, but that just made the book all the better, since everything wasn't `perfect'. The Secret of the Golden Cowrie is a great book, with good Christian principles.

What does "senile" mean, anyway?

Connie has heard a lot about her Aunt Laura, including the fact that she is "senile".(whatever that means) She isn't so sure that a visit with her is a good thing. On the other hand, it could be exciting. Aunt Laura doesn't seem so very strange, and Stella, the lady who is staying with her, knows all about birds and cameras. Aunt Laura shares a secret problem with Connie. What if Connie could find a way to help her? As Connie trys to do just that, she finds herself in the middle of a mystery.

The conference was attended by SO participants from 15 nations. These proceedings document the program and the talks at the conference. This conference was preceded by a two-week summer school. Ten lecturers gave extended lectures on related topics. The proceedings of the school will also be published in the NATO-AS[ volume by Plenum. About the Author

Dr Iain J. Clark

is former Head of Foreign Exchange and Commodities Quantitative Analysis at Standard Bank's London office, and has also worked for JP Morgan, BNP Paribas, Lehman Brothers, Dresdner Kleinwort and UniCredit. He holds a PhD in applied mathematics and an MSc in financial mathematics. He is the author of Foreign Exchange Option Pricing: A Practitioner's Guide and is currently an independent researcher and consultant.

A very good description of the models and market conventions used for pricing commodity derivatives

The book provides a very good description of the pricing models commonly used for commodity derivatives, as well as worked examples of applying them, which is very useful for gaining a better understanding of how the models actually work in practice.

It also provides invaluable background information about the most important commodity product lines and the quoting conventions used in these markets, which I had previously only been able to gain information about by talking to traders or quantitative analysts.

I previously developed/maintained an analytics library for a commodity derivatives desk in an investment bank, having come from an interest rates background with little knowledge of commodities. Had this book been available then it would have proved invaluable.

That being said, this book is not really intended for those who just wish to gain a better understanding of the strategies used to trade commodity derivatives, either in the context of hedging customer facing business as a dealer or for proprietary trading.

It is not a book for beginners. Readers should have a background regarding option pricing, Black-Sholes Model, stochastic calculus and trading. Great book that presents a lot of types of commodities as well as pricing models including some "exotic products" like weather derivatives.

About the Author
Louis P. Pojman (1935-2005) was Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at the United States Military Academy and a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. He received an M.A. and Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary/Columbia University. He was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Copenhagen and a Rockefeller Fellow at Hamburg University. He received his D.Phil. in Philosophy from Oxford University in 1997.His first position was at the University of Notre Dame, after which he taught at the University of Texas at Dallas. Later, at the University of Mississippi, he served for three years as Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion. In 1995, he became Professor of Philosophy at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He most recently was Visiting Professor at Brigham Young University in Utah and Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Oxford University. Pojman won several research and teaching awards, including the Burlington Northern Award for Outstanding Teaching and Scholarship (1988) and the Outstanding Scholar/Teacher in the Humanities at the University of Mississippi (1994). He wrote in the areas of philosophy of religion, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy and authored or edited more than 30 books and 100 articles. Louis Pojman passed away in 2005.

An excellent introductory text

Louis Pojman's "Philosophy: The Pursuit of Wisdom" is one of the best introductory texts around. It is quite readable and for the most part free of jargon. Moreover, it is balanced and fair, giving an honest presentation of each of the sides on a particular issue.

The book consists of the following sections: a general introduction to philosophy (including a short section on logic), philosophy of religion (the arguments for the existence of God, the problem of evil, faith and reason), the theory of knowledge, the philosophy of mind (including the mind-body problem, monism, functionalism, personal identity), freedom and determinism, ethics (including discussions of relativism, egoism, utilitarianism, Kantianism, and religion and ethics), and existentialism. At the end of each chapter is a set of questions for discussions and a brief list of books for further reading.

One of the best is the section on the philosophy of mind. Pojman presents about as good a discussion of the issues relating to mind and body as I have found in an introductory text.

An easy-to-understand introduction

As a professional philosopher with nearly 30 years of teaching experience, I have had the opportunity to peruse and use a variety of introductory texts in philosophy. Some are very good, some pedestrian, a few close to worthless. I would rank the late Louis Pojman's one of the best. It is quite readable and for the most part jargon-free. (Where unfamiliar terms are introduced, Pojman explains their meaning.) Moreover, it is balanced and fair, giving an honest presentation of each of the sides on a particular issue.

The book consists of the following parts: a general introduction to philosophy (including a short section on logic), philosophy of religion (the arguments for the existence of God, the problem of evil, faith and reason), the theory of knowledge, the philosophy of mind (including the mind-body problem, monism, functionalism, personal identity), freedom and determinism, ethics (including discussions of relativism, egoism, utilitarianism, Kantianism, and religion and ethics), and existentialism. Each chapter ends with a set of questions for discussions and a brief list of books for further reading.

Although all the major sections of the book are helpful, one of the best is the section on the philosophy of mind. Pojman presents about as good a discussion of the issues relating to mind and body as I have found in an introductory text.
