Fair balance of conceptual explanations vs. mathematical rigor

Till date I have not found a single best book for applications of statistics and probability to healthcare, but this book is probably the closest. A majority of books on "biostatistics" shy away from mathematics and will focus only on preliminary concepts. Also, I have noticed that many of them have gaps in the presented information and do not build up the subject in a logical order.
Prof. Martin Bland is a recognized authority in the field. He has explained the concepts extremely clearly using real world examples. This book does a very good job at covering nearly the entire spectrum of statistical method used in medical research with emphasis particularly on core things. In the appendices that follow (for example: in the chapter on regression) he has also discussed the mathematical basis for the presented material in a little bit more detail for the interested reader (continuing the same example: the least squares technique).
I guess there is no universal optimal point for conceptual detail vs. mathematical rigor, and I would have personally liked to see more details about different distributions, their CDFs, moment functions, and so on. I believe that the book should assume at least high school level in mathematics i.e. logarithms, calculus, differential equations in one variable, and elementary real analysis. However, this remains a lacuna of the book, in my personal opinion which will not be shared by others. Secondly, in the chapters on Bayesian methods and sample size, again I have felt that the author was torn between the need for comprehensive coverage vs. detail. Though I would have voted for a little bit more detail, I can't argue with issues of having a reasonable size and target audience of the book.
Overall, perhaps one of the best books in the field, thought I could have done with some more mathematical rigor.

I really enjoyed this book. Bland shed light on many issues for me, including non-parametric statistics and number needed to treat - there's more going on there mathematically than meets the eye.

Stuffed elephant, two children, and roaring giants in this exciting YA novel by Ted Kelsey

Ted Kelsey wrote Olga, a delightful YA novel that felt like Alice falling deep in rabbit hole and ending up in Wonderland - except that in Olga, it was not just one but two persons, Sally and Jack, who were flown to the clouds, and eventually reached Cloud Castle, by a stuffed elephant - and Neil Gaiman's Coraline, when she discovered another world different from the one she was living in.

The comparison ends in those areas though as Kelsey wrote the story with a voice distinctly his, devoid of the attempt to sound like Rowling or Gaiman or the Grimm Brothers. Kelsey wrote in short, simple sentences but carefully selected words, uncomplicated and yet exciting enough to keep you reading until the very last page. The story's pacing is unhurried evident by the chapter division, which is neither long nor short for readers falling between the ages of seven and 12.

The story gains momentum when our child protagonists, Jack and Sally, discovered something suspicious in the old, abandoned house. What they thought as one evening of discovering ghosts in the dark turned out to be an adventure on the clouds and meeting a character named Olga along with her father Ragash and a cook named Freakything.

In this novel, Kelsey marries two realms, reality and fantasy, and places two children, Jack and Sally, this story's protagonists, in the middle of the action that involved clouds, giants, moths, and a tiger. Kelsey did not paint a rosy picture of the human world as seen from the eyes of the children in this story. He wrote a realistic world, one that a reader can relate to when she reads about curfew, school, and being grounded. The underlying messages of humankind's indifference to nature and arrogance in dealing with issues are subtly painted in the conversations of several characters, who have witnessed everything that humankind have done over the centuries.

Kelsey sneaked in an airplane in the story and a character under the name Mr. Dodadudis whose appearance did not directly change the course of the story. The airplane is not irrelevant though and you'll know why in Chapter 24. Kelsey hinted another book with Mr. Dodadudis playing central character. Wise, nice insertion adding spice to the Kelsey writing and series of stories.

Kelsey teamed up with artist Dillon Samuelson in providing black and white illustrations to the story. This reminded me of Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddel's collaboration in three of Gaiman's novels, Coraline, Fortunately, the Milk..., and The Graveyard Book. These three books are sold in one collection on Amazon.

Samuelson's illustrations in Kelsey's novel is only a handful though. I wish there was more. Yes, this reviewer (a 29-year-old mother of three graduate student slash journalist slash social develoment worker) would love more pictures.

Olga is also a perfect weekend read for adults looking for reading materials that won't cause them cerebral hemorrhage. This one is fun and lighthearted and yet, it did not forget to emphasize the crucial role that humans play in this world. What that role is up for you to find out. Clue: it's pretty obvious.

Olga is a 5 Star/Top Pick for 2015 by the Underground Book Reviews and recently received Official Selection Honors in the Young Adult category of the 2015 New Apple Summer eBook Awards for Excellence in Independent Publishing.

Kelsey is slowly building his name as a celebrated author of children's literature who makes winter reading warm and fuzzy. His next book, Shasha and Wally Watson Vs The Faker, is coming out soon. Captured My Attention

Olga is a refreshing read for it's unexpected plot and characters. The premise is quite unique that I was intrigued, wondering what was happening in this untold world of giants. The actions thrilled, moving quickly, and the characters developed well. Each chapter dangles a carrot in front of you, enticing you to continue reading. I finished this book in three days.

Ted Kelsey does an excellent job unraveling the symbolism of the novel with integrity, not losing the tone and flow of the novel, and without becoming didactic. The message of courage and inner strength resonates well as the young protagonists, Jack and Sally, discover their real selves in the midst of grotesque fear and evil. Recommend not just for adolescents but adults as well.

If you enjoy reading fantasy novels that are easy to read, fast-paced, and creatively articulate, this novel is for you.

Olga, a children’s novel by Ted Kelsey is an inventive and enjoyable story about two young people, Sally and Jack, who get caught up – literally – in a bit of mischief that takes them on an adventure in the clouds. Once there they encounter Olga, the unhappy daughter of an evil cloud giant who has been plotting with his brothers to go to earth and destroy it. Jack has to learn to be brave, and both he and Sally struggle to avoid the many dangers they face in the cloud kingdom, as they figure out a way to escape from the clouds and return to their families back on earth. The illustrations in the book by artist Dillon Samuelson are extremely well done, and they help bring this entertaining story to life. Samuelson is a terrific artist! Olga is an ideal selection for parents who love to read to their children at bedtime.

About the Author
Linda E. Reichl is Professor of Physics at the University of Texas at Austin and Co-Director of the Center for Complex Quantum Systems. They include quantum transport theory, Brownian motion, quantum, classical and stochastic chaos theory, quantum control of atomic and cold atomic systems, and the conductance and spectral properties of open quantum systems. Professor Reichl has published more than 160 research papers, two books, A Modern Course in Statistical Physics and The Transition to Chaos, each of which have appeared in several editions. In 2000, she was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society "for her original contributions to the field of quantum chaos."

Cumbersome

I found this book to be clumsy in its notation and sloppy in its delivery. The information presented in the book is more than comprehensive, however. Each chapter ends with a "special topics" section that covers new and old ideas in the field. Yet the book manages to fall short with its organization and presentation. When new concepts are introduced, very little background is given, and steps in calculations are often bypassed. There are many examples to follow, but even the examples seem pointless when the next step in the derivation has been skipped and it takes the reader several minutes to find the connection. In addition, the book is a somewhat poor reference in the way that many chapters cannot stand alone, due to the quirky notation that is scattered all over the book. If one is not familiar with this notation, then if one wishes to reference the book, he or she will have to waste time finding out why the author uses a capital N there and a small n here, a "mu prime" there and a "mu" here, or a vector k there and an apparently scalar k here.
In summary, the book is comprehensive, covering a wide range of ideas both new and old, but it fails in the fact that it cannot present the information in a clear manner.

an excellent textbook for graduate students

I'm glad that there's "eventually" a stat-mech textbook that takes from grads' points of view. It starts from a undergrad level of thermodyanmics and ends to somewhere close to renormalization group. It's a book with clear examples, figures, and explicit derivation of equations for average grad students rather than particular flock of "genius". I gave it two thumbs up.

Good introduction to Statistical Physics

I own the first edition of this book, which I enjoyed thoroughly. Clearly written, it steers a course between introductory and advanced. Whether an owner of the first edition should also buy the second edition, may be doubted, as is clear from the 1 star comment below, but a physics student looking for a good "more advanced" book after having followed an introductory university course, would certainly appreciate this second edition, which is a stepping stone between the basic intro books and the specialized monographies on e.g. phase transitions or hydrodynamics. I have given 5 stars to compensate maximally for the 1 star review below, which does not do justice to the book.

Very handy reference tool for writing

I've owned this book for about ten years and moved it with me whenever I get a new technical writing assignment. It has saved my writing hide with the subject matter experts numerous times! It shows the most common errors made in English usage in an easy-to-understand manner. I had trouble with misplaced modifiers and "like" as opposed to "such as" for years. This book helped me learn which way is correct usage!
I like the straighforward and often humorous style. I'd love to see future editions.

Insightful, Handy, and Concise Guide to avoiding

common grammatical and word meaning errors in English. Learn to use proper English. Useful for speakers as well as writers. A good example is the reflexive pronoun "myself". Do you know the proper usage of this word? What about when to use "may" versus "might"? If not, this book is a good start. I think most people could benefit from this book. The problem with errors in speech is that we unaware we are making them and often repeat them. Others, however, may pick up on our mistakes. Also, this book is concise and a fairly quick read.

difficult to read

This does have great tips on grammar; however, some of the book is definitely outdated. Also, it seems to me that this type of book would be written primarily for those of us who aren't naturally adept in English usage -- if that is the case, I think the author should remember the KISS rule (Keep it simple, stupid) and avoid sentences like this one in chapter 13: "A false comparison is one wherein a comparative or a superlative degree construction is used without a clearly stated basis for the comparison..." . Who needs to muddle through sentences like that! Otherwise, though, this book can be very helpful.

The Johannine community comprised Jewish believers who regarded Jesus as the long-promised Messiah of Israel, but at some point in the community’s life, under the leadership of one Diotrephes, some members of the community chose to reject this conviction and to entice other members to do likewise. Olsson anchors his thoroughgoing interpretation of the three letters in this conflict among Jewish Christians over the nature of the Messiah and the renewal of Israel’s ancient covenant. Among other things, this implies that the letters were written in reverse order of their numbering.

Brahmacharya is an observance that is among the limbs of yoga, according to the ancient sage Patanjali. Yet exactly what brahmacharya is remains a mystery to me. Gandhi had his own take on brahmacharya and was an unrelenting advocate. Original V.C Andrews fans, please save your time and don't even bother

I'm a huge fan of V.C, Andrews actual work - the Dollanganger series, the Casteel series, the original My Sweet Audrina. I endured the ghostwriter's work all the way to Gemini series, but gave up since each series had become even more poorly written, recycled, and unresearched than the last. Still, I was such a fan of the original My Sweet Audrina that I gave this a chance and even pre-ordered. Well, if you're a fan of the ghostwriter's latter works, then this book is for you.

Besides the fact that the book was once again peppered with inconsistencies, something that I thought could be avoided with only one book to reference, the largest inconsistency were the characters. They were so different that they weren't even echoes of the original ones and the only similarity they had were the names. The detailed writing and intricate storytelling of Ms. Andrews wasn't even attempted at let alone accomplished. Even the watered down Lifetime movie of My Sweet Audrina held more suspense and intrigue than this sequel. It was merely a set up, a bunch of dragged out filler in the middle, and then a hugely predictable ending which was most likely done as some lackluster attempt to connect it to the original story. The whole thing was just awful and not in the guilty pleasure way.

I'm sorry but this book was garbage. Melodramatic

Before I read this book, I was joking around about it with a fellow V.C Andrews fan about how the story would unfold. It seriously HURT to find out that my joking was very much a reality. I'm sorry but this book was garbage. Melodramatic, predictable and boring! Years have passed and Audrina is now a good little house wife to Arden who has blossomed into a chauvinistic, arrogant pig. How do you stay with someone who throws the fact that you sexually assaulted right into your face?! It made no sense. The dialogue was crap. Every scene with Arden has him saying something too "out there" to be real. And Audrina's empty head is a boring cave of questions she never bothers to answer or solve for herself. "Hello?!" "Hello?!" "Is my husband really that much of a jerk?" YES. From about page 30, you guess what will happen (and it does). I'd have preferred it if she had done a Corrine and laced Arden's plum-sauce porkchops with a little extra something. Oh and the rest of the cast? Forgettable! It's like the author took bits and pieces of other V.C Andrews characters, blanched them and shoved them in here. Evil old woman? Check. Innocent, beautiful girl? Check. Dramatic pregnancy? Check. Oblivious mother figure? Check. I struggled to keep myself interested and finished quickly-not because it was good of course, but because I skipped whole paragraphs with oh so dull descriptions with a side of Audrina's idiocy. Maybe the shock therapy affected her after all poor thing... I loved the first book. It was haunting, frightening and beautiful in its own way. But this...? I'd ask for my money back but how about you, the author, keep the money and leave the original V.C Andrews characters we know and love blissfully alone.

Oh, I had high(ish) hopes for this

Warning: if you have fond(ish) memories of the original My Sweet Audrina, penned by the late great VC Andrews herself,, walk away from this insipid sequel. Silly me, I thought that Neiderman might veer from his cut-and-paste tired recycled scenarios and actually try to write something that would echo VC's writings..I was wrong. VC was the queen of purple prose, but in a *good* way; Neiderman is the king of simple sentences. This story is essentially interchangeable with any of the other 'masterpieces' he has written under the Andrews name. Absolutely nothing holds true to the original characterizations.

Amazon really needs to offer the "No Star" option because this ws just that bad.
