Co-founder of the Provincetown Players and one of its leading writers, Susan Glaspell won the Pulitzer Prize for Alison's House (1930) and was also successful as an actress, producer, and novelist. MARY E. PAPKE is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her areas of specialization include late nineteenth and early twentieth century literature by American women and feminist theory. She is the author of Verging on the Abyss: The Social Fiction of Kate Chopin and Edith Wharton (Greenwood, 1990).

"Nugent (Notre Dame) is a fine historian and a good storyteller. His latest book is a multilayered narrative of the movement of millions of Europeans to the Americas. Different from many other descriptions of the transatlantic passages, which tend to be focused on one side of the ocean (the lands of the senders) or the other (the countries of reception and resettlement), Crossings tears down what Frank Thistlewaite once called a saltwater curtain. Nugent moves―and moves his readers―back and forth across the Atlantic, describing the social and political conditions that pushed Europeans out of the Old World and the factors―not least of which was the promise of a better life―that pulled them into the New World, particularly to this country and to Argentina, Brazil, and Canada. Using a variety of social and demographic data by which to compare the several countries of immigration, the author challenges certain widely held assumptions about American [meaning US] exceptionalism. That is one of the subtexts in this interesting and informative work. This concise, well written, and data rich book is a nice overview of major features of migration across the Atlantic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nugent summarizes a large volume of data quite well. He initially reviews features of the emigrations from the major European donor nations and then the immigration patterns to the 4 major American recipient (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, US) nations. There is particularly nice use of tabular data and text summaries of important qualitative features of migrations. Nugent is very good on the many common features of the migrations - the extension of traditional intra-European patterns of migration, the importance of expanding rail and steam links, the increasing importance of labor migration, and the high rate of backwards flow across the Atlantic. Nugent also does a nice job of discussing many of the distinctive and contingent features of the trans-Atlantic migrations. Major emigration from much of the Balkans was contingent on the relatively late penetration of railroads, the high rate of female emigration from Ireland reflected distinctive features of Irish society, and the strongly oneway migration of Ashkenazi Jews resulted from recurrent pogroms in Russia. I suspect many readers will find this book particularly interesting with respect to these more detailed discussions. The existence of so much migration between Canada and the US was unknown to me previously and the descriptions of the South American migrations are quite interesting.

Nugent is also concerned with evaluating 2 major issues. First, was migration to the USA distinctive, as is claimed in our national mythology. Nugent concludes that the answer is no. While there were some distinctive features, migration involving the USA had much in common with migrations involving the other recipient nations. Nugent also analyzes a stereotyped model of the demographic transition and finds it fails to capture the richness and variety of demographic changes. Very nice bibliography.

About the Author
S. Krishna is Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India. He received B.E. degree from Bangalore University in 1995 and M.E. and Ph.D. degrees from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1999 and 2003 respectively. He worked with Kirloskar Electric, Bangalore from 1995 to 1997 and M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore from 2003 to 2008. His areas of research interest are power system dynamics and control. He is an Associate Editor of SADHANA, a journal of the Indian Academy of Sciences.

Good book, Low printing quality

I have no question about the content. It is a great book written by famous authors in this field. However, the printing quality of the book (that I received) is not good. I guess that it is a print on demand version and came out from an inkjet printer (not a laser printer), so a lot pictures are not clear. A little bit disappointed, the price does not match my expectation.

An amazing new voice in YA fiction

Beautifully written, alternating between the voices of Payton and Kendall, this book gripped me from the first page, the characters staying with me long after the book ended. Also, this book manages to do what very few books achieve- it tells a great story and keeps you entertained while at the same time dealing with many of the issues facing young people today: the subject of identity- daring to accept who you are as well as finding the courage to bare yourself to those closest to you, taking the chance that you might lose them in the process; choosing between fame and friendship, treading the line between being a celebrity and being true to yourself. These issues are very sensitively handled, the writing jumps off the page, the dialogue is sharp and witty. Payton and Kendall, the protagonists, are very likeable and very real-I think we all can identify with them at some level and that is another of the strengths of this wonderful novel. Compelling. Highly recommended. A great read.

Five stars for The Gravity Between Us

What happens when the line between friendship and love blurs? Kristen Zimmer's The Gravity Between Us is a daring and emotionally charged story that explores this premise and hooks the reader from page one. Kendall and Payton have been friends since childhood. Neither can remember a time when they were not there for one another. So when Kendall's life is transformed by Hollywood and its haze of glamour and perfection, her love for Payton becomes a secret she must guard. Can the two young women deal with the pressure of fame--especially when staying true to oneself feels impossible in the fame game?

The Gravity Between Us is a fantastic read--humorous, romantic and daring. Kristen's writing style is engaging and honest. In Payton and Kendall, she's succeeded in creating characters whom you care about instantly. And her portrayal of their relationship is beautifully rendered. I loved the Hollywood angle, the question of how one learns to deal with other people's reactions to same sex relationships and the idea of the zany game that is celebrity.

For me, The Gravity Between Us is a must-read new adult novel! I can't wait to read Kristen Zimmer's next book!

Despite all the good ratings about this book, I was a bit hesitant in the beginning. I thought, "oh yeah, another 'straight' girl falls for her bestfriend book..."

But, I gave it a try anyway. I've read so many horrible books in the past, I thought it couldn't hurt. Then, BAM! I was zoned in, and couldn't get any work done because all I could think about was getting to my book. It's such an easy read and very, very likable. I enjoyed both characters, with their own voices and stories.

For every worshiper and worship leader! Practical!

I like this book because as a worshiper and worship leader I have experienced all kinds of feelings during corporate worship and Bob explained them to me and I thought...OKAY that makes sense. He teaches about the river Ezekiel prophesied about and how to stay in and flow in that river. And not just stopping there but how to let the worshipers take over in their fire and love of God to a new place operating in freedom to prophesy, receive healing, and for non-believers to experience God's tangible presence and leave knowing THAT was God.
It was super practical and I feel like I could apply what I learned right away!

Incredible!

This is an incredible book! Bob Sorge has articulated what is on the heart of many lovesick worshipers of God. People who lead worship, and not just worship pastors, need to get a hold of the concepts that he presents. This isn't a manual on how to "do" worship, it is a primer on how to "be" worship in a corporate setting. I've been to the place of worship he describes a few times, we've hit it in our congregation a few times, but what the author describes would take us from just wishing it would happen again someday, to the expectant hope that we could demonstrate and experience this level of worship consistently in our corporate gatherings. In the span of one paragraph I found myself deep in the Spirit, then crying, then laughing, then yearning for more! Don't miss this one.

If you want to get out of the "2-fast-3-slow, and a hymn-&-a-hearse" way of "doing worship" at your place of worship, then this is the book for you. It explains the who, what, where and why of worship, and how to get closer to God through it. If you are open to some changes, you won't be disappointed.
